A few weeks after Democrats from New York’s assembly met and deposed Silver as speaker, an assembly member from the Bronx, Carl Heastie, got the votes to succeed him. The first Black speaker in the state’s history, Heastie has passed bail reform and tenants’ rights measures, pushed for increased school spending and women’s rights and raised minimum wages across the state, including a $15 hourly wage in New York City.
